A missionary service flag, probably created by women students at Pacific University between 1920-1921. It closely resembles military service flags made at Pacific in honor of students who served in the First World War. Each star represents one student or alumnus of the university who became a missionary, while the cross symbolizes their devotion to Christianity. The flag commemorated alumni such as Joseph Elkanah Walker (missionary in China, 1872-1922), Margaret Dolly Hinman (missionary in Turkey, circa 1890s-1910s), and others. For a brochure produced in honor of the flag and a list of the alumni it honored, see PUA_MS11_158.
