Cast rehearsal for the Luau
-
Description
-
Pacific University students apparently rehearsing for the annual Lu'au performance circa 1970. It is also possible that the image was taken during an alternate Fall dance performance by Pacific University's Haumana O Hawai'i (Hawaiian Club). The "Queen" of the Lu'au is wearing the Queen's costume, a white satin dress, over her street clothes. Other members of the cast are wearing street clothes. The stage decorations appear to be partially completed.
-
Pacific University began hosting an annual Lu'au in 1961. Student members of Na Haumana O Hawai'i (Hawaiian Club) organized and performed in the event, raising money for scholarships. The Lu'au included a dinner, sales of leis and other products flown in from Hawai'i, and performances of Pacific island dances. The Lu'au is normally held on the second Saturday in April in Washburne Hall. The name of the event was changed to Lu'au and Ho'ike in 2019.
