Queen and attendants dancing at the 1975 Luau

Description

A Pacific University student wearing a crown and a white dress, dancing on stage while flanked by three other women dancers in white dresses. The crowned woman may have been acting as the "Queen" of the Luau, a role that usually wore a similar white dress. If so, the other women would be "Princesses," each of whom represented a different island. The photographer, Peg Osland, was on the staff of Pacific's publicity department.

Pacific University began hosting an annual Lu'au in 1961. Student members of Na Haumana O Hawai'i (Hawaiian Club) organized and performed in the event, raising money for scholarships. The Lu'au included a dinner, sales of leis and other products flown in from Hawai'i, and performances of Pacific island dances. The Lu'au is normally held on the second Saturday in April in Washburne Hall. The name of the event was changed to Lu'au and Ho'ike in 2019.
