Six Students performing at the Luau
-
Description
-
Six students performing on stage at Pacific University's annual Lu'au probably between 1971-1973. They are identified on the original slide from right-to-left as: Gail Miyazono (Class of 1972); Russell Onuma (Class of 1973); [an unidentified student]; Brian Yamamoto (Class of 1972); Jan Olingy (Class of 1973); and Flor Matias (Class of 1972). This may have been at a rehearsal: the cardboard paper at the base of the stage would be covered with greenery and flowers during the actual performance.
-
Pacific University began hosting an annual Lu'au in 1961. Student members of Na Haumana O Hawai'i (Hawaiian Club) organized and performed in the event, raising money for scholarships. The Lu'au included a dinner, sales of leis and other products flown in from Hawai'i, and performances of Pacific island dances. The Lu'au is normally held on the second Saturday in April in Washburne Hall. The name of the event was changed to Lu'au and Ho'ike in 2019.
