Haumana O Hawaii Luau Court
-
Description
-
A group of performers identified by a handwritten note on the original slide as "Haumana O Hawaii Luau Court, 1970." This may however actually date from slightly later, from sometime between 1970-1973. The image shows a part of the annual event called the "Royal Court," in which several students representing the King (wearing a yellow cape) and Queen (wearing white) of Hawaii witnessed dances performed by Princesses (each wearing a different colored dress), who represented the various islands of Hawaii. This photograph appears to have been taken during a rehearsal: the cardboard at the base of the stage would be covered with flowers and greenery during the actual performance.

Pacific University began hosting an annual Lu'au in 1961. Student members of Na Haumana O Hawai'i (Hawaiian Club) organized and performed in the event, raising money for scholarships. The Lu'au included a dinner, sales of leis and other products flown in from Hawai'i, and performances of Pacific island dances. The Lu'au is normally held on the second Saturday in April in Washburne Hall. The name of the event was changed to Lu'au and Ho'ike in 2019.
