Royal Court at the Luau, circa 1970
-
Description
-
Performers representing the "Royal Court" of Hawai'i stand on stage, probably at Pacific University's annual Lu'au circa 1970. The Royal Court performance was included in the Lu'au from the 1960s-early 1970s, in which students representing the King (wearing a yellow cape) and Queen (wearing white) of Hawaii witnessed dances performed by Princesses (each wearing a different colored dress), who represented the various islands of Hawaii. The picture may have been taken at a rehearsal or other event, as none of the performers are wearing the leis that were typical of the main Lu'au performance. It is also possible that it was taken during an alternate Fall dance performance hosted by Haumana O Hawai'i (Hawaiian Club).
-
Pacific University began hosting an annual Lu'au in 1961. Student members of Na Haumana O Hawai'i (Hawaiian Club) organized and performed in the event, raising money for scholarships. The Lu'au included a dinner, sales of leis and other products flown in from Hawai'i, and performances of Pacific island dances. The Lu'au is normally held on the second Saturday in April in Washburne Hall. The name of the event was changed to Lu'au and Ho'ike in 2019.
